Care for Children
Right education is that which creates a sense
of belongingness with the whole world." |
Since
1985, the Art of Living Foundation's Care for Children, has
served the children and their communities in rural India.

Our children, come from some of the most economically
disadvantaged families in the poorest parts of India. Through
this program they are provided with free education, books,
balanced meals and regular medical care.
Care for Children brings the light of education to many children
who are the first in their families to have ever had a formal
education. Since public schooling is not available in these
areas, this is the only opportunity these youngsters have to
acquire the education and skills they need to become
self-sufficient adults.
Our schools nurture the complete child, including mind, body and
spirit. Family values are strengthened and social barriers are
replaced by progressive attitudes. In addition to the basic
curriculum of science, math, reading, language and arts, several
innovative approaches are incorporated into the students' daily
routing. These include:
Laughter: Studies are presented as an enjoyable challenge
instead of as an overlyserious undertaking.
Friendliness: Students are encouraged to make new friends
continually, fostering a feeling of closeness and togetherness.
Belonging: Each child is encouraged to feel that his/her teacher
is also his/her friend and confidant. On this ground of mutual
trust and admiration, a feeling of belonging to a caring
community is cultivated.
The Care for Children Schools:
Tribal Schools: In the remotest and poorest parts of India,
these schools are the only chance these children have of any
form of education. Blending vocational training and basic
education the Tribal schools enable these children to stand on
their feet in a rapidly changing world.

Prison SMART: Violence ends where Love
begin
"Over 100,000 people in prisons all over the
world, from India to Russia, the US and South Africa, have
benefited from the Prison SMART program." |
PrisonSMART stands for Prison Stress Management and
Rehabilitation Training. It is based on Art of Living's unique
stress management program and is customized to the needs of the
prison inmates and to the individuals and institutions that work
to end the cycle of violence.

The
program helps prisoners in rehabilitation, and to reduce
violence and drug dependencies. PrisonSMART teaches life skills
that enable individuals to accept responsibility for their past
actions and to handle future conflict and stressful situations
successfully.
Prison SMART's innovative and results-oriented program serves
inmates, residents of halfway houses, those on parole and
probation, at-risk youth, victims of crime, law enforcement
officers, corrections professionals and individuals that deal
with the aftermath of voilence such as rape crisis centers,
shelters for battered women, and runaway shelters. The program
serves, by offering tools to alleviate the trauma experienced by
victims of crime and abuse.
The program has had great success in helping these communities
deal with the stress in a positive and enriching way. Prison
administrators have reported that inmates who have participated
in the program exhibit less acting out in confrontational
situations and increased cooperation with staff.
The cornerstone of the program are the dynamic breathing
techniques that are part of the Art of Living Course. These
release the accumulated effects of stress from the nervous
system and help participants manage negative emotions in a safe
and non-violent manner.
Reported benefits include:
- improved sleeping patterns,
-
ability to
accept responsibility for past actions and
-
ability to
handle conflict and stressful situations non-violently
-
improved
confidence and self-control

Emergency Relief Work: Answering the
Call for Help
"Over the years, whenever tragedy has
struck our planet, Art of Living volunteers all over the world
have come together in a unanimous spirit of service and
solidarity - Giving from the heart, food, supplies, shelter,
trauma counselling or stress-relief workshops to victims of the
capriciousness of nature or man." |
Irrespective of caste, creed, religion or geography these
volunteers uphold the vision of a "One-World-Family" and live

needed, to be available to the situation, surrounding
circumstances and the willingness to jump into it - to be
available."
